The role of social media in the development of Uganda.
Wikipedia defines social media as computer – mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via vitual communities and networks.
Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp ,Instagram and Snapchat rank among the commonly used networks in Uganda
Social media has influenced the development of Uganda socially ,culturally ,economically and in many other various ways
From the business perspective, Social media has established it’s self as the steering wheel of uganda’s development and businesses
Today almost all major large companies use social media to advertise their products, it compliment radio and television advertisements as they try to expand their brands. This mode has helped companies to reach out especially to the middle and rich classes & also minimize on the advertising costs
The recently added whatsapp feature “status” led to the emergency & most efficient adverting mode engineered by ADCORP uganda. Adverts from different companies are shared on whatsapp statuses by users and earn a monthly pay according to the number of views.
The twitter world & hashtags ,digital influencers and marketers use social media to inform the public about their trending products easing advertising costs and reaching millions of potential customers in a short period of time while also earning a living
Social media acts as a platform where information is spread and distributed, All the leading media houses have facebook and twitter pages where they disseminate news at no costs.
Community policing has also been boasted by the invention of social media
Customer care service provision ,all companies offer help and advice via their social media pages .This helped wide out service centre in every corner of the country
Telecom companies have also gained from social media, in each and every corner of the country –the word social bundle is on everyone lips
Despite all the above, social media still faces challenges ranging from the poor and expensive internet to the fact that all social media networks are non Uganda which means profits are enjoyed by foreigners.
As I wind up, Social media has also proved to be among the leading cause of time wasting and inefficiencies at work places due to it being addictive in nature.
